joza2210
Hello As you know I have the Brinsea incubator mini advance incubator and my eggs are hatching tomorrow ... Just wondering ... Do i take the egg disc out and place the eggs on a paper towel in the incubator ? Or should i just leave them on the egg disc ? And also if i have to put them on a paper towel when taking the egg disc out will it matter if the eggs turn over or anything ? Thanks Josh Edited June 23, 2010 by Guest

joza2210
thanks i am going to do it now ... Does it matter if the eggs move when i do it ? I as got told i shouldn't mess with the eggs for the last 2 days because it is called "lockdown" Thanks Josh

Redwing
It wont be the best surface to hatch on If its day 18 then stop the turning, remove the disc and place some cloth or tissue over the hatching area then return the eggs and put the lid on - then its 'lockdown' from days 18-21 The chick will move to its final hatching position between days 18 and 21 so moving the eggs on day 18 is fine. I find that the first chick that hatches bangs in to the other eggs anyway and they move about but the chicks still make it out ok
joza2210
Its day 20 today so should i still take it out ? Thanks
Redwing
Sorry just re-read your post, the disc should have come out on day 18 when you stopped the turning and raised the humidity I'd leave it alone now but its not ideal
joza2210
Hummmm ... Right ok ... Is it bad for hatching on or bad for the chicks to be on ? Thanks (Should i be stressed over it)
Redwing
The discs are plastic and could cause splayed legs in chicks, they need to hatch on a non slippery surface If the plastic is patterned/textured it may be less slippery and not so bad If you havent turned the turner off you must do that now. check that the humidity is somewhere around 55% ish and the temperature is about 37 - 37.5 Day 20 and 21 are critical, if you take the top off now to add a cloth you will release all the hunidity (especially as its only a little inccy) and you risk a lower hatch rate Leave it alone now, sit on your hands and next time make sure you think of this on day 18 not 20. Day 18 is when changes should be made
joza2210
Thanks ... when they first hatch then should i put them straight into the brooder ? Thanks
Redwing
Thanks ... when they first hatch then should i put them straight into the brooder ? Thanks No leave them in to dry out, only take the lid off and remove chicks when they ahve all hatched, if the hatch goes over 36 hours or so then uickly whip out any hatched ones but otherwise leave them in till they are all out and all dry if at all possible

craftyhunnypie
No - allow them to fluff up first! I remove mine after a couple or so hours & hopefully others will also have hatched. Good luck! Emma.x

Lewis
I agree with what everyone has said .... but can I suggest you get a book on hatching This one may be a good starting point. Its quite a basic thing to know about day 18 + leaving them to fluff up etc, you may still be learning but a book will help
Redwing
Josh, splayed leg is easy to spot, one or both legs will be sliding out from under the chick and pointing outwards, if you see one like this keep an eye on it but try not to open the lid if you can absolutely avoid it Splayed leg can be fixed in many cases, do a search on here for the sticky plaster 'cure'
