RIR X Light Sussex Line Hens

Recommended Posts

Scroll down to 'Goldline', which is a RIR/LS cross and says they produce brown eggs. Not sure how large they would be though, but fairly large I suppose.

Edited to say, it says a Sussex Star is a RIR/LS cross too, and that lays brown or white eggs. I wonder if it makes a difference which is the rooster and which is the hen, or if the crosses aren't straight 50/50 crosses? :?

Thank you...I just took a look at that site too :D

From my research so far it is the Warrens that appear to lay a large number of brown eggs...think these are the type of hybrid that are battery hens?!

I have a local supplier of the RIR x Light Sussex...and another supplier a bit further away that sell Goldline and a Rhode Star...which is a RIR x Light Sussex isn't it?...I think I will go back to fb for a few minutes as I am getting myself tied up in knots...I just read after another seach that Goldlines and Warrens are the same hybrid :eh:

Off to fb to clear my head

Yes, I think the Warrens/Goldlines/Gingernuts are all the same hybrid. Confusing...

I have a light sussex hybrid here that looks like the sussex stars, so I'll let you know what she lays whens he does, hopefully any day now... although I am guessing it'll be smaller to start with.

Have you looked on the large egg leader board to see if anyone says who laid their large eggs? I did notice on another forum most of them seemed to be Warrens or similar.

'Brown' is a very subjective word when it comes to eggs

In an egg show an egg from a warren would be classed as 'tinted'

Brown eggs come from Welsummers, marans etc..

The only hybrid that may lay a dark egg are the Speckeldy and Black Rock - even then you will get ones that dont lay dark eggs. A friend of mine has three Black Rocks, two lay a tinted egg one lays a brown egg

Of course you do get exceptions but for every one oerson who says their Amber hen lays brown eggs they'll be another two who say theirs doesnt

The only way to guarantee brown eggs is to get a pure breed

If you can get a supplier to guarantee that their hybrids will lay dark eggs thats great but the bird you buy may not agree to those terms!

Well, my light sussex hybrid (presumably a 'sussex star' has obligingly laid her first egg this morning. It is actually more brown than my Marans hybrid's egg, which is more pinky brown in comparision. It's not that dark though, but definitely 'brown'. Not that big either, at 42g, but will presumably get bigger, as she is only around 18 week sold herself, bless her.

How big are the eggs you are getting? My Buff Sussex are a year old and lay eggs around 62-64g, but they are tinted, not brown. I have found a couple of breeders who have what they call 'mature pullets' that are last years hatch, but in their first year of egg laying, like my Buffs. Could you maybe find a breeder who has some of these, or maybe even look at some ex batts, as these will be older and laying bigger eggs, but obviously won't be very dark brown.

I did notice someone local to me (in Northern Ireland, so not much help to you I suspect!) had a couple of hybrids he claims lay very dark eggs, a 'Cherry Maran' and a 'Copper Star', both based on French Copper Black Marans. If you google, you might find these?

Hi :D

Thank you for your message...very interesting :D

Stella one of my 3 White Stars is a fab layer...she doesn't miss a day bless her...burning herself out like they tend to! Her eggs always lay at least 70g :D Her eggs are so popular when I give them to friends I got another 2 white stars :D Their egg size are coming along very nicely :D

Harriet and Phoebe have only been laying for around 4 weeks and their eggs weigh in at around 50-55gms daily already  When I went to buy them the chicken expert guy at Thornes chose them because he said they were already laying which was perfect

Mildred one of my 3 Columbine/Skylines laid for 53 days without a break and hers are between 60-65g and a gorgeous pale green :D

Of the others...Gertrude my Magpie may have laid me a couple of softies but nothing else although she sits on the nest going through the motions bless her

Fifi* and Cleo** (Miss Pepperpots...although you would never believe they are the same hybrid...one is black with gold-coloured neck feathers and the other is completely black!) two of my original 3 Omlet girls...*lays very thin shelled eggs although they are a good size cream coloured egg and ** lays cream torpedo shaped eggs with extra lumps and bumps on

Lulu my beautiful Maran Cuivree (sounds like could be same as a Cherry Maran) has only laid me a wind egg so far (1gm and looked just like a Malteser)...she is at least 27 weeks old if not older...I am wondering if she will ever lay the dark brown eggs I am expecting :eh:

Daphne another of my Columbine/Skylines lays a beautiful pale blue egg...although not every day at the moment...50-53g usually.

Robyn (Columbine/Skyline) lays a darker green egg than Mildred...usually 58g or thereabouts.

Clara my Speckledy lays dark brown eggs with speckles on :D They weighed 44gms and no more for weeks and weeks but yesterday and today they have weighed 50gms  I don't think she will ever lay a bigger egg...never had a double-yoker from her either

There is a place a couple of miles from here that sells RIRxLight Sussex...they are POL but I think most of them look like they are a few weeks off laying as their headgear is smaller and pinkish...may have to go back to Thornes (will ring first as it's quite a journey from here to ask if they have any older Warren-type hybrids)...they sell a Goldline and a Rhode Star which I think are similar if not the same as a RIRxLight Sussex.

Bet you wishes you hadn't asked

Hi :D

It may well be that I will get two Warren-type hybrids on Friday...just need to sort out housing and run for them now that my rabbit is in the Eglu...we dumped her hutch at the weekend as it had seen many better days  Have got some trellis panels and wire for the run...which we intended to make-up once we sell the Eglu anyway...just need to sort sleep accommodation :D

Popped up the road earlier to take a look at their RIRxLight Sussex...no one seems to know much about them really...there is no chicken knowledgeable person from what I can gather :wall: Of the hens they have for sale 5/6 seemed older and that is what I am looking for but I didn't like the fact that some of the water within their pen was stagnant :vom: I just don't think I will buy from there :eh: Plus there were a lot of hens with lots of feathers missing in another pen...their eggs are available to collect by the general public via little wooden hatches...I asked a couple of people if they were ex bats, they didn't seem to know but one lady said no they weren't, they are just unhappy :boohoo:

I rang the other place that is about 45 mins from here and they were very knowledgeable...they have around 4 Goldlines that are laying already (22-24 weeks) plus others and they have been fully vaccinated and wormed recently plus I wouldn't be afraid to ask if I could check them over for lice etc before buying :D Their business is very different from the one up the road from here...they really seem to care about their girls :D

The place I usually get my girls from only have POL at the moment

Anyway if I do get two new girls at the weekend I will post pics for you all to see :D

Thank you everyone for replying :D

Has anyone bought hens from Warren Villa Poultry?

Lou :D
