Stupid question

Recommended Posts

Stupid food question - friend got me a bag of Marriages mash for hens. Do I mix it with anything? I am used to the Omlet feed (came with hens) which looks like coffee granules but lighter. The mash looks very boring and unappetising - have said that they have the 2 mixed and are troughing away.

Hi

Not a stupid question!

I know what you mean about it looking unappetising! I don't mix it with anything but I do have two grubs, one with layers mash (the powder) and one with layers pellets. I throw down some mixed corn when I get home from work for them to scratch around for!

In the winter I occaisionally mix the mash with warm water and add yoghurt, raisins, mealworms etc. for a warming treat!

You can add a little water to the mash to make it a crumbly texture (not runny) but you will need to remove what gets left at the end of the day as it needs to be fresh.

Ours are contrary things...

1. They love it runny (in fact complain if it is too dry)

2. They love it a few days old.... If an old pot has been left in the garden for some reason they home in on it big style!

Ah yes - of course chickens don't read the rule book. Funny things.
