Hello, another newbie question from me! The hens water gets really muddy, really quickly. This morning I refreshed it at 7:30 and in an hour it was a murky mess. they like to stand on the edge of it, so guess that's why...but my question is - does it matter? is it OK for chickens to drink from what is essentially becoming a foot bath?! Or do I need to position it higher up?? (The instructions say put it as low as possibly without touching the floor, which I've done).

They seem to like it with added flavour.

 

Refreshing it daily and cleaning the Glug thoroughly with hot soapy water once a week is enough.

Ours did the same when we first got them so we hung the drinkers up a bit (we have a traditional ark not an eglu or cube). The drinkers now stay pretty clean. One of our girls will only drink from the drinker as a last resort though. When you empty the drinker on the ground to change the water, she rushes in and drinks it, accompanied by much manic chuckling, the muddier the better as far as she is concerned!

I've got a Go and had the same problem. I hang it quite far off the ground now, about the same height as the feeder, i.e., head height and they have no problems drinking from it. It still gets pretty murky but it is an improvement.

My pekin's and light sussex bantams like clean water but as soon as you empty the water out the Marsh Daisy's are straight in all happy.

 

If I am cleaning the water the Light Sussex might drink some but only if they can't see any other.

 

Nothing to worry about.
