cefreeman
Very excited my bantam eggs started to hatch , 2 came yesterday and another was waiting for us this morning! Out of 12 only four have sucessfully developed! However number 4 has just arrived and there's a problem She/he is very lively and chirping away but on closer inspection it seems that its back passage has come out! I'm going to leave it in the incubator over night and see if anything happens ( not sure what ). Has anyone ever experienced this with their hatchlings and if so some advice would be HUGELY accepted with open arms!!!
Egluntyne
Don't panic just yet. It might be just the equivalent of the umbilical cord, where the yolk sac was drawn back into the chick, which can look a bit disconcerting. It will wither and drop off if it is. cefreeman
Thanks for that! It does look rather large compared to the others but I'm in no hurry to move her/him from the incubator as I have no other developed eggs! It does actually look like my full grown chickens bum when they do a poo, I hope you know what I mean
Egluntyne
I do. Fingers crossed. if it does have a prolapse, it won't thrive, so you will know pretty soon.

cefreeman
Hi, just an update on my chicks bum!! Seems to have shrunk but is still a bit larger than the others ( bit like mine really ). I think when it's your first time hatching eggs you can be a bit over cautious! The same chick was just sitting there closing it's eyes this morning and wouldn't open them! I was horrified and immediately picked her up and she still didn't open them and I was wondering what I could do, so put her down to find some advice and her eyes popped open He/she obviously didn't want to get up! Goodness they are just like me!They are a bit like new born babies you soon learn! Can't wait to get some more! Was gutted when I had to throw away the eggs that didn't hatch!!Is 4 from 12 good or bad? My husband seems to think eggs sent through the post doesn't give them the best start! Redwing
4 from 12 is not great - you'd expect five or six from posted eggs really but you hatched some so its not all bad 8 or 9 chicks from 12 eggs not posted would be a good hatch rate so the postal system does have an effect on the eggs You did well to choose 12 eggs, many people go for 6 and then run the risk of ending up with just one or two chicks
cefreeman
Just a quick update on the prolapsed chick! Well she hasn't got a prolapse and is thriving! think I panicked a bit as this was my first ever hatch and she just didn't look the same as the others will be a bit more relaxed on the next lot!!!
