What to do with a softy?

Recommended Posts

Not sure this is in the right forum - but Ginger laid her egg as usual yesterday morning. However when I came to 'shut up shop' , for bedtime, Ginger had not gone up bed, but was stood frozen to the spot in the corner of the WIR all fluffed up with wings dropped towards the floor. Then suddenly an egg softy appears, and off she tottles up the stairs to bed.

I put the egg in the bin - but thought afterwards what a waste, I could have even given it back cooked to the chickens.

What do others do with a softy?

If I have found a softy shortly after it has been layed (and it is still intact!) then I tend to put it on to hard boil straight away. I figure it won't have picked up much bacteria in that time, and if it has then 10-12 mins boiling ought to zap any nasties. I'm still here to tell the tale at any rate!

If I'm not sure how long they have been layed, or landed in poo :vom: or are broken then they go in the compost.

I think they are fine to eat, its just the shell is soft, -but they really creep me out :anxious: and mine go straight in the bin

And sometimes by the time ive found it the hens have eaten it anyway.

I'm the same with rotten veg, cant bear to touch it........ you know when you put your hand in the bag to oull out a potato and your finger goes into a soft spot :vom::vom: will make me scream, hate it hate it :vom::shock:

When Madge was laying softees we used the egg as the next to be eaten - usually next day's breakfast and did not even keep in the fridge (none of our eggs are stored there). The softees needed scissors to open.

All perfectly fine.

Normal procedure around here is it either (1) gets laid on the cube roosting bars and drops through to be thrown out at cleaning time, (2) gets laid in the run/garden/sometimes nestbox and eaten very quickly by whoever is fastest whilst everyone else runs after them. We've never eaten one ourselves, although James had one laid on him :vom:
