Norsewood
Hello! Just about the take delivery of some chooks & have a last minute question. I've been told by a few sources that using baked chicken shells is as good as buying grit or oyster shells. What's the club members experience of this & if I do go down the egg shell route (which seems a tad cannibalistic for my liking!) how long & at what temp do I bake them for? staceychristie
I've always used mixed soluble oyster shell/grit as well as crushed hens egg shells. To cook them, just keep the shells as clean as you can (we usually only used old boiled egg shells) and pop them in a foil tray for a few mins. You're not trying to 'cook' them, just sterilize them. I'd suggest that you won't have enough shells to completely dispense with grit etc. Stacey
Egluntyne
If you give them the baked eggshells as a source of calcium, they will still need plain flint grit for the purposes of grinding up their food. If they free range, they will pick up some, but it is best to leave out a pot of grit for them to access if the feel the need.
