Dangri
hi all, just a question on letting the girls out to free range... how on earth does anyone sort out the poop that gets scattered throughout the whole of the garden??? We're outside quite a bit, and it would seem that we're bringing in a horrible amount of poop from the girls - it's just everywhere, and as much as I love them, I don't so much enjoy the travels of their poop ( Dxx
migsy
They poo everywhere don't they?! I keep my hose out and constantly hose it down when I am outside. I also have some chicken netting to restrict them to a limited part of the garden - they still fly over though
Tutti Frutti
Mine are shut in the borders behind mesh. I got fed up of clearing up poop of the decking and pathways - and the girls ate my last lawn so they're not allowed on the new one
sezra
I poo pick all the time! I let the girls out for about an hour at the end of the day and then when I lock them back in their run I poo pick the garden. If there is an unpickable one (curry poo) I swoosh it away with water. I know what you mean though, we have a strict "no shoes in the house" rule if the kids have been out, just incase I have missed one!
crankycookie
Heh, it is one of the things you learn to deal with as part of chicken ownership. I just leave poop on the lawn and when the gardeners come, it just gets collected into the mower and then dumped into the compost bin. For walkways and the deck, liberal use of the jet setting on the hose sweeps most of it into the planting areas. I have learned that if there's chicken poop anywhere in your yard, you WILL step in it, so I just leave my "backyard shoes" (just some grubby old slip on sneakers) right by the door and swap shoes whenever I'm in/out of the house. It only takes a second and keeps me from tracking anything nasty into the house.
sezra
so I just leave my "backyard shoes" (just some grubby old slip on sneakers) right by the door and swap shoes whenever I'm in/out of the house. I do agree, it is just part of chicken keeping although I completely sympathise with you, I was astounded at how much they pooed when I first got mine. I dont know why....I just hadn't even considered it! Sadly chicken poo has become part of my daily life now but I really dont mind, love my girls, they are worth it! figarogir1
Crocs and constant poo picking for me too I also mow the lawn every Friday night at the moment so that it is as clear as possible for the weekend! It still makes it's way indoors though (normally on the dogs feet )
Plum
Lovely subject I poo pick each time I go out to them because I just don't want loads of flies. Bad enough with aubiose all over the house without droppings

Learned the hard way though - my 2 year old hid one of them, and I just had to go out, and thought 'I can't be bothered to look for it, I will only be a minute' until I feld that lovely warm squelch between my toes - and I thought I was being careful After that, I always look for them before venturing out

Chucky Mama
I poop a scoop by flicking it into a small trug with a cat litter scoop. Pretty quick and easy, it then goes into the compost. With the patio I scoop or leave to dry and brush off.
