Mollie333
Hi Betty is the best chicken, she lays an egg every day and has laid an egg today as well, i went to check her, she was in the house, drinking loads, lying down and her tail feathers are pointing toward the ground. Her eyes are fine but her nose is running a bit and her she is rattling when she breaths really bad. She seems lethargic but can walk and her legs are fine. I think her crop is squishy, and when i picked her up alot of watery like fluid is coming out of her beak which is also mucusy. I think its on her chest. She is eating a little bit but not alot but is drinking loads, which it is then coming back out.. Any ideas? Chucky Mama
Oh Mols . Does the stuff coming out smell? She sounds really poorly. What exactly is she doing now?

hippy chick
Oh Mollie poor you, you seem to be having as much luck as me lately. I hope that she picks up for you
Chucky Mama
Mols I would bring her into the house in the warm and quiet. I am not sure that rushing her to a vet will make a huge amount of difference at this point as the stress of the journey in her condition may not be a good thing. Is there still fluid coming away from her? What is her breathing like now? It is possible that she has inhaled some of what has come out of her crop which could be the reason for her rattly breathing. She doesn't sound at all well Mollie, you may have to steel yourself for the worst.
Mollie333
Thanks Started her on some antibiotics, She is roosting with the small birds, poults and baby wyandotte.. She has chosen to be in there and is 'sleeping'. still breathing the same. Any ideas on what it could be? Ill have to see what tomorrow brings. Chucky Mama
It's difficult to say what could be the cause as it is a little unclear as to what is coming out of her crop and whether that is the issue or a secondary problem. She could do with seeing a vet in the morning.
Mollie333
Tried to call vets tonight, closed. We will take her in the morning.. This stuff is literally like cloudy water, but it is thick a bit like human mucus, but white\cloudy.
Chucky Mama
If you think that she needs to see a vet, your vet will have a 24 hour emergency service and will arrange to see you. It will be expensive though.
Mollie333
TBH, i think waking her up and stressing her will push her further, ill take her early in the morning, thats if she is still here.
Chucky Mama
Are you sure that she is OK to stay out with the others tonight?

Plum
Hello Mollie, hope the antibiotics are working but agree she needs a vet. I wouldn't keep her with the youngsters in case it's a respiratory infection or myco. Tell the vet she has been with them and perhaps he/she'll give them something in case it's passed on. Egluntyne
Probably not a good idea, mollie, to give antibiotics that haven't been prescribed for that particular hen by the vet, as they may not be appropriate for whatever is ailing her. I think I'd separate her from her pals, just in case it is something infectious. Good luck at the vets today.

Mollie333
I posted another post about the antibiotics and you said it was fine. They are Vetremox. She spent the night in with the turkeys, was a touch and go weather she would make it tbh. Just went out and she was on top of the coop (she can fly.. although i clipped her wings.. ) ready to start being an escape artist AGAIN. She is looking alot happier in her eyes today, i got her down from the coop and put her on the grass, no sign of bringing up any fluid today.. but she is moving slow, her breathing is still rattly but not as bad, and her nose is running a little. she has improved. She went in with the turkeys herself, it has no roosting bars (little wyandotte perches on the nest boxes, turkeys just nest) so she was comfy on the floor. i tried to put her in the spare house run in a box but she wasnt having it and was getting stressed. As i said she has definatly improved in my eyes, i just hope she makes a good full recovery.
Egluntyne
I posted another post about the antibiotics and you said it was fine. They are Vetremox. This is true, but you indicated in that thread that the vet had prescribed the Vetremox for different hen, Pat, with a bad led, and not for this hen. Am glad she seems to be improving. Mollie333
.. And people then said that it would be ok, so did the vets, who said it's a 'general antibiotic' Thanks for the advice, she seems to be getting better, i will post an update soon. Chucky Mama
Glad that she is better Mollie. I am a bit confused re the antibiotic thing but in any event it is important that you don't medicate any chickens without consulting a vet first. It is also important that a full course is given. Giving a couple of days of antibiotics instead of a full course will not completely get to the root of the infection.
Mollie333
took her to they vets and they gave her some general antibiotics, but 'cant find anything wrong at the moment, too early to tell' its a five day course. But tbh she is looking much better, but im keeping her on for the full course.
