Candling - good or bad news?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help interpret my candling results please? We have 6 Cream Legbar eggs (blue) under a broody and today is day 7. I can't see any spidery veins, but in 5 of them there is a large dark area (sort of 3/4 of the egg) and a fairly neat air sac. If you move the egg around then the air sac will move depending on which way up the egg is? Does this all sound like good news? Just not sure because I can't spot any veins. The 6th egg has a dark area in half of the egg and around the top of the dark bit is a very clear ring. It moves around very easily so am assuming this is a dud.

Does this sound roughly what a viable egg will look like?

You should be able to see the veins by now unless the shell is very thick. The shadow doesn't sound right at this stage. I just finished an attempt at hatching cream legbars too and at day 6 you could see the light through the whole egg but see the spidery veins in red. If there is a red circle around the egg, it could be an early death...do a google search for a blood ring to see if it's the same.

I watched a lot of YouTube videos on egg candling to make use of what I was seeing.

Also, a broody hen may disgard a dud egg.

Good luck!

Thanks - maybe I'll candle again tomorrow and see if I can see anything different! I've been looking at quite a lot of pics but I just can't see anything clearly on my eggs, and we've got a 1000w torch! - apart from the air sac (which looks like the pic of the good egg but I just can't see veins) and the egg which I think is definitely going to turn out to be a dud.

Perhaps in a couple of days I might be able to see some movement? And that should make it all a bit clearer.

Well I think I have some positive news - checked them all again today. 4 seemed to have quite clear red veins altho' it looked like they were on the inside of the shell? One is definitely bad, so have disposed. The last egg I'm not sure about so have marked it and will candle again in a couple of days! 4 out of 6 ain't bad. Fingers crossed they all make it to hatch day!

Well, very excited - the chicks are hatching, a day early! (hatch)

Out of the original six, 2 were duds in the end (by day 13/14 it all became clear which were which) and I have 4 cheeping away, 2 of the shells are being pipped through right now!!

Will post some pics later.... (hatch)(hatch)
