warning: don't take your eye off the ball!

Recommended Posts

Just thought I'd tell you my cautionary tale so that you don't have to go through the nightmare that I am currently experiencing!! They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and it is sooooo true!:idea:

I got complacent and took my eye off the ball :oops: ---the aubiose in the coop is so absorbent that it always seemed so nice and clean and I didn't inspect thoroughly enough on a regular basis and SUDDENLY Kaboom----red mites EVERYWHERE in their millions :vom::vom:

Luckily I have a spare coop and the girls have been spending their nights in there since Tuesday, but have had to stay out in the garden all day while I am at work---they have been OK so far but I am uneasy all day leaving them outside... :(

The main coop and run has been sprayed and sprayed again----and I am still finding the little blighters  ---I find them on my boots and legs after I go into the run so presume they must be in the ground itself....I have been finding them in my clothes and hair despite frequent showering/hair washing (tonight will wash hair with anti-lice shampoo) And worst of all I have found them in my bed and on my pillow---despite changing all bed-linen, clean clothes every day etc etc!!! Have done the dogs with Frontline and tonight have done the chickens with it also (had sprayed and powdered them all a few days ago)

And now I have found the blasted mites in the spare coop---after only 2-3 nights of the girls being in it. So have sprayed and diatomed that as well....

On Saturday I will be out at the crack of dawn buying RIP-fleas and I will spray the whole house with it....and in the meantime I have warned my friends not to visit me as I am so paranoid and have visions of them lurking in every corner of the house fo rthe next 8 months :(:(

I feel so awful---it could so easily have been prevented and I honestly thought it would never happen to me :wall::wall:

Yikes, bad luck, but it could happen to anyone at any time. Don't be too hard on yourslef. Do you have an eglu or a cube? Where was the auboise, in the nesting box or run? I got a cube to diminish the risk of red mite! (Though we still have it as was kindly brought in by some ex-batts). But have never seen an infestation. Good luck in the battle.

I took on 2 hens given by a friend that was new to chickens so would not have known there were lice crawling over them when they gave them to me.Now im having to treat all my chooks and the 2 that brought it in to my flock.I know how you must be feeling you would love to click your fingers and make them go away.

I zapped mine with poultry shield today - that definitely works! Everywhere it was sprayed, when it hit red mite the liquid turned green as the mites disintegrated! :vom: But it was very satisfying! Cube power washed, bug sprayed and now mite free (will still zap with total mite kill/poultry shield or Ardap every three days to make sure i got all the blighters!)

Poultry shield is brilliant stuff. Even hubby hasn't had them bad in his wooden shed this year. Just a few eggs which he caught very early on in the year & took precautionary measures every weeek since. 8)

Sorry you've had a bad time with them.

When hubby had them a lot in his house last year - he stripped it down - heat gunned them, yacht varnished everywhere - then poultry shielded & red mite powder everywhere & powdered the chooks too. He sprayed poultry shield in a mister bottle daily on the roof inside & the perches. It worked!

Only ever had them once in the cube last year - soon got rid of them. Last year was terrible for them - a lot of us had a bad time with the devils last year.
