An amazing place to visit

Recommended Posts

Yesterday we went to Snowshill Manor, which is just amazing. A man called Charles Wade filled it, literally to the roof with whatever took his fancy. The house is full of almost hidden little rooms, twisty staircases and an incredible collection of objects. They range from bunches of keys to Samurai armour. He asked that the National Trust keep it dark to maintain the theatrical feel to it.

He lived in the Priest's house next to the manor which felt like the 'The Burrow'. (Harry Potter- if you haven't read the books).

It's in the Cotswolds near to Snowshill Lavender Farm, which we also visited. Perfect time of year and they have a field of sunflowers. We sat there thinking how wonderfully calm it was there until we realised that of course it was - we were surrounded by fields of lavender.

It was a lovely day, and the countryside is spectacular. I'm green with envy of any of you that live around there.

I don't think I've done it justice here.

If you decide to visit the Manor go early. As we left, people were queuing for tickets and the carparks were full.

I live not far from Snowshill and quite close by is Hidcote Manor, which is the most stunning National Trust garden (the house isn't open to the public) and makes a very nice place to combine with a trip to Snowshill. Both get very busy in the Summer, particularly weekends!

Chasleton House is another NT property which has not been restored to within an inch of its life and therefore still has character. You need to book for this one though. I traced my ancestors back to Chaselton and there's just a dozen houses, the big house and a Church! - no doubt a skivvy or farm labourer then!
