hi ive had 3 appenzellers hatch this morning and was just wondering how you sex theses and at what sort of age ?

 

or do i just have to wait for them to start crowing lol

ive read that they are early crowers, as early as 6 weeks apparently, so that should make sexing easy if thats true!

Oh I love those! They can be quite skittish & flighty though. I remeber seeing some youngsters once, when I collected some chicks. They were a bit crackers.

I'm sure with a lot of fuss & attention you'll be able to tame them. Lucky you - I'd love some!

Oooh lovely! here are my two at about 6 weeks.

 

 

Im told that girls hairdo's are bigger and point forward more, and no crowing yet! so im hoping my two are girls.

They do have a reputation for been skittish so make sure you handle them everyday and they should be fine. mine dont excatly come to me but i can hold them easily and they will eat out my hand.

I have a full sized Appenzeller, Nyssa, she is VERY skittish, has never crouched and hates being handled.

 

That said, she will jump on my lap for corn or grapes

i think i have 2 boys and a girl im a bit gutted as if i have only one girl she will have to go to my dads with the legbar chicks ,i really wanted a cow bird but i cant takle introducing a single hen
