should i move chickens into a nice big shed?

Recommended Posts

at the moment i have a coop that is on that has a small place for them to roost and a next box and run underneath i thought this would be ok but since it has started raining i see i am in for some problems in the autum and winter i have them on a concret standing next to a nice big 6x8 shed that used to be an aviary (i pulled down the wir the begining of the year before deciding on getting chickens :( i am now thinking of clearing the shed out and putting the chickens in there and a covered run on the concret this would make a shed of 6x8 and a run of 8x8 so they would not really have to come out over the winter if its really bad weather. the only thing that is giving me doubts is the red mite problem :vom: , i have found a small amount in the coop i have steam cleaned and used poultry shield but i am still finding some if i moved the chickens into the shed would it be likely that red mite will get into there as well?

is it a good idea to put mastic/sealer in the joins of the shed, i read somewhere that its a good idea to paint the inside white. has anyone (i am sure there is) that have converted a shed what do you do about perches

Red mite can be a problem in all housing.

Lots of people have successfully converted sheds and it sounds as though you have enough space. I think some people limewash the insides to help get rid of the red mite. Also if it is white you'll be able to see the red mite more easily.

What is the problem you are having with the rain? Is the house you have them in letting in water or is in the ground it is on? Sorry if I missed this information in your post.

the house is ok but i have made a run but it has no cover only netting i have a gazzebo over the top which keeps the middle of the run dry but it is getting very wet around the sides i dont suppose the chickens mind a bit of wet but it just makes it harder to keep clean
