I'm pretty new to to POL's

I have had my Blackrock for 3 weeks. I was told that she was 16 weeks when I got her, so I guess she is 19 wks now.

 

I have just been out to pet her and she crouched does this mean that she is coming into lay

Hi - Yes chances are she is ready to lay, especially if her comb in nice and red, and she is "talking" a lot. Good luck with her Sue

oooh I'm so excited

I have never had a POL before and tbh never really understood what all the excitement was about

But now I am terrified what if it hurts her

Ooh how long till she actually lays

It is exciting. However I've got a hen who's 40 weeks and not laid yet. I think I'll faint with shock if she ever lays now!

 

I shouldn't think it would be very long now she's crouching - and I'm sure it will be fine. I wonder if it is a shock to them the first time?

When I got my 4 about a year ago one of them was already crouching from when I first had them, and it was 4 weeks until the first egg...seemed like years!

I think it often is a surprise when they lay their first egg. Sometimes it will just be on the floor somewhere, and they even will lay from the perches till they get the hang of things. I couple of false eggs in the nest boxes can be a help at giving them the right idea, and also it is supposed to help stop them egg eating, as they have a good "look" at it with their beaks and decide its not edible before the real eggs appear.

 

My first egg was produced when I had 2 friends staying for the weekend, the chap was so excited he insisted we hardboiled it and then carved it for us all to share

My Penny laid her first egg exactly 10 days after I first saw her crouch. It was so excited that when I tried to take a photo I dropped it!

She has been laying for a week now, her eggs are small but perfect.
