cavysqueak
Our new hen, a Bluebelle named Lavender has started to lay eggs. However, they are really small! About 38-40g. She's been laying them this size for about a week now. Does this mean that she'll never lay proper sized eggs? I wouldn't be so worried if the size of the eggs was changing, or slowly increasing. Does anyone have a hen of a Bluebelle size who only lays small eggs? Or will she increase the size of them in time? Thanks, XxX
Olly
I have to say that the size of the egg isn't always related to the size of the hen, and my Speckledy who is quite a big bird has always laid quite small eggs, although they have big yolks. If this is the first week however, I would reckon that they will get bigger as she gets into the swing of things - 30-40g is quite small, and she's probably just building up to the real thing. Burtie14
I'd say our chickens' eggs have almost doubled in size during the 3 months we've had them. Dusty, our Bluebelle, is the biggest chicken but laid the smallest eggs. However, over the course of summer the eggs have got much, much bigger from all the girls, but particularly Dusty. However, it's still our smallest chicken, Ginger, that lays the biggest eggs.
cavysqueak
Thank you for your replies. I feel a bit relieved now - I look forward to seeing her eggs grow in size! Now all we need is to get the other girls - young and older to start laying (again, or for the first time!). Thanks again, XxX
coco
My light sussex Flora has just started laying and her eggs were tiny about 34g but she laid yesterday a lovely 67g egg.
