Patricia W Posted August 19, 2010 Share Posted August 19, 2010 Don't worry- they are so grateful to be rescued and so quiet when they first come out, you'll learn together. Ordinary mash will be fine. When I got mine, they were also selling the ex-bat products at the rescue so if you do want them, you may be able to get them there. I use ex-bat pellets with all my hens because it's no more expensive if you take off the 50p donation to BHWT with every bag. I'd put them in the coop when you get them back home and don't be surprised if they don't come out straight away. You might also want to put out several feeders etc as sometimes they are so used to competing they fight over them. But mine didn't and four months later are normal, very cheeky hens. From my three, I get 2 eggs every day and occasionally 3. I originally had 4 though and 5 weeks on one died peacefully in the nest box after a day of free ranging. So be prepared. I read the threads on here and prepared as per advice given by both the good folk on here and from the Trust. What I didn't do was consider that the ex-bats would have a minds of their own and would take things at their pace and not mine. They didn't want to eat the mash we had, they didn't want to be kept separate and the sure weren't going to sacrifice their freedom because of a bit of bullying from the others!
