veggiesue
Hello, Just 5 days ago, we got 2 new (point of lay) girls, and I have noticed (today) that one of them is from time to time, opening her mouth. She is eating and drinking, so I am not sure why she is doing this. Can anybody offer any suggestions as to why she may be doing this, and if she is ok. THanks, Veggiesue
LuckyChickenLover-
Is it hot where you are at the moment? Chickens pant, so that could be it.
veggiesue
No it is quite cool here at the moment. It was evening when I noticed her doing it. I will keep an eye on her today. It could be she just had something stuck in her throat.
Ain't Nobody Here
I've noticed a couple of my girls doing that on occasion. It usually passes after a day or so. Don't panic, but it can also be a sign of gapeworm (unlikely though, unless it persists!)
veggiesue
One of the older hens is now doing it, and she also seems to have something similar to a cough, and there is a purring kind of noise when breathing. She is eating, drinking and getting on with the usual stuff, I just get a little worried when I see something different happening. Thanks
Plum
If she is rattling when breathing it may be a upper respiratory infection that needs treatment.
Cheryl
Look at the eyes is there any white frothy stuff in them.. if there is.. you will need BAYTRIL its an antibiotic for respiratory infections , my three Baldnecks had it a few weeks ago after one week of medicine made a full recovery, catch it early and they will be fine ,but keep them separate from the other birds..
