Book group - Snow Flower & The Secret Fan

Recommended Posts

Chat here about the above read.

I love this book - it was one of the first that I owned that also got downloaded to my Kindle.

Its rather like 'Memoirs of a Geisha' ,& I really enjoyed learning about the Chinese rituals & customs. I thought the foot binding process was horrific, but fascinating & so obviously well researched & beautifully written.

I also like the way the characters work together,& how the 2 main characters relationship dissolves over a misunderstanding.

The scene of Beautiful Moons death was really well written,& so shocking,as it was totally unexpected.

OUR NEXT BOOK IS Dissolution by C.J. Sansom

A quick note: I am wondering if I am rather flogging a dead horse here,as the last 8 or so people on the list whose turn it is to choose a book have not got back to me.

If you are on the list,& wish to remain so,please let me know, otherwise I am going to be doing some culling - I simply don't have the time to keep chasing people up who no longer wish to participate.

Likewise,if you are on the list but do not wish to choose a book,or do not read any of the books that are chosen, please tell me to remove your name.

Thanks

I also really enjoyed this book, although beforehand and when I first started reading it I was not sure that I would like it at all. The story of Lily and Snow Flower was very well written, with several unexpected turns, and it was a real eye-opener into some of the practices and attitudes the Chinese had in the past, about which I previously had very limited knowledge. I work with a number of Chinese students at the College where I teach, and although this book is describing life in times gone by, I suspect that traces of some of the attitudes described in the book still remain. I think it will make me think in a slightly different way when I am dealing with these students, and may help me to understand their behaviours better at times.

In response to your final note, do please keepthe group going, as it has introduced me to a number of excellent books that I would certainly never have thought of reading if they hadn't been recommended here. I also enjoy reading other people's opinions on the books we have read. Please keep me on the list!

I am still reading this book and am sort of enjoying it as I am finding 'Lilly' quite irritating for some reason. I too am fascinated by the Chinese customs and the way women were treated. I am not normally squeamish, but the foot binding description made me feel physically nauseous - it didn't help that I was 25,000 feet up in the air at the time!

I have since looked up lots of information re foot binding on the www - horrific!

Thank you Roxanne for recommending the book. I wouldn't have chosen it myself, but I have learnt a great deal since reading it and hopefully Lilly will grow on me!

I'd like to stay on the list too please.

I loved this book, it was both well written and fascinating.

It was another book that made me very glad to be a European woman of the 21st century. We may moan sometimes, but at least we do have freedom of expression, and many rights which are so easy to take for granted.

I would also like to remain on the group list and would like it to flourish again. I also have read so many books including this most recent one, that I wouldn't have chosen otherwise.

I can recommend the current book, I have read the whole series and I am eagerly awaiting the next one which is published later this year. My OH recommended it to me, I was dubious too, but I have learnt a lot through reading them and have been entertained along the way.

Hi Cinnamon,

I thought I'd pmd you but obviously my technological skills weren't up to the mark, because it doesn't look from my sent messages as if I did  . I would like to stay on the list please. I've had a particularly busy summer but was hoping to join in from September's book....

Thanks

hi readers,

i'm a new member and only joined last month so Snow Flower & the Secret Fan is the first book i've read with the group - unfortunately i haven't finished it yet as i had a bad patch with my health condition and unexpectedly ended up in hospital again :?, so i've avoided reading any of your posts so far other than cinnamon's opener incase there's something in there that gives the ending away!

but i am racing through the remaining pages in the hopes of finishing it in time to be able to properly take part in the discussion, and am looking forward to reading all of your posts!

i would like to say though that like cinammon i am too loving this book, and believe that i will close it for the last time knowing that it is a story to be cherished  .

Hi all

Just got back from Africa but did not take Snowflower and the Secret Fan because I took my e reader instead. This means that I have it still to finish. Please don't stop the group Cinammon  I really enjoy reading books that I wouldn't have chosen myself. Plus I am looking forward to when it's my turn to choose. Happy reading everyone. :D
