Dizzy-Deb
Both hubby and i were woken last night around 3.30am by a screaching noise. Only heard it the once, and was awake for ages afterwards understandably. Could it possibly have come from one of the chickens do you think ? I cant say as have heard anything like it before and it did sound in that general area where they are ... but know how noise can travel at night. Do chickens screach ? I havent heard any 'normal' chucks sounds at all since we have had them and they have gone to bed at night or when they get themselves up ( I have been leaving eglu door open but seriously thinking of shutting them in now!!) I am sleeping very lightly at moment cause I am listening out for them with them being new and as said havent heard any other night time noises from them. xx
Bertrum
Owl, cat, fox, badger, hedgehog, human, stoat, etc, etc. I'd think a hen would make more than a single outburst, so it is more likely to be just the normal noises of some nocturnal creature. As you say, you are sleeping more lightly now because of your new hens and so will be awakened by noises that you would not have noticed before. Guest
I would say owl. Badger cubs are grown up now so wouldn't be them. Might be a stoat or something like that. My guess if it was a high pitched squeak would be an owl.
mafia princess
I think we all sleep a lot lighter when our chickens first arrive, I have had mine nearly 3 weeks and feel like I have had a another baby! Also I now sleep wth the windows open to listen out so I also hear more noises. A fox cry can sound like a baby screaming/crying so this may be what you heard. I close my eglu door at night for piece of mind plus the fact that my neighbours have informed me that they have spotted a rat "Never seen one in all the time we have lived here!" Stress is a word I am becoming famiiar with as I don't want to upset the locals. So long as your girls seem happy and you know they are safe, try not to worry too much
the bradley bunch
sounds like a squirrel - they normally communicate using their tails, but at night with low visibility they will make a loud horrific screaching sound if there is a potential threat (not sure whether it's to warn off the predator or whether it's to warn other squirrels of the predator). it's not a recognisable sound because they don't often make it, and because they nest/sleep in tree tops the sound can travel in funny ways. i have to admit i'm a bit of a squirrel freak and have been studying grey squirrels for a while for a book i'm writing. saying that i always advise locking the eglu door at night to keep your girlies safe & hidden from foxes, rats, stoats & especially problematic mink - adult minks can squeeze through a 2 inch gap and would make easy prey out of a chicken i'd also advise bringing their food in at night as this will attract any potential predators. if you take these simple precautions you & your girls will sleep safely & soundly
Chucky Mama
It could be a screach owl or a barn owl. Have a look on youtube as they have some recordings. Hegehogs also screach when mating (no rude joke please, this is a family forum )
sjp
this time of year I'd say a fox as it's coming up to mating season the dog fox makes a god awful screaching sound which travels for miles to let every other fox know it's his terratory (sp?) Alis girls
I hate things that go bump inthe night - it could be the neighbours - someone having a bad dream - may not be animal

the bradley bunch
Have a look on youtube as they have some recordings. Hegehogs also screach when mating (no rude joke please, this is a family forum ) great advice from chucky mama! if you're still worried deb pop onto you tube & type in a few of the animal noises suggested and see if you can identify it that way i wouldn't worry tho tbh it's unlikely to be anything connected to or that will affect your girls , and if it something that upsets them they will most likely alert you by clucking at the top of their lungs for ages even after the threats gone... (as our doris did this morn when our kitten thought he'd try & 'share' the hen house with his sisters...poor max, think he's having a bit of an identity crisis, Lol )
