Converting rabbit eglu for chickens

Recommended Posts

A happy !gored! owner, I'm quietly (stealthily?) planning the expansion of my flock in the spring, so am hunting on eBay for a 2nd eglu....I know that you can buy a kit to convert an eglu classic to suit rabbits, but is it easy to convert a rabbit eglu for poultry?

I've not actually seen the rabbit version irl, so sorry if this is a dim question - but I don't want to bid on something (currently going for less than the classics themselves) if it's going to be either impossible or very expensive to make it work for chooks.

Any tips really appreciated.

Thanks :)

Well, I got a bit carried away last night and seem to be currently the highest bidder on a PINK (pink eglu) Classic - in Kent! Which is pretty much as far away as it could be & not somewhere I ever go - but that said, if my maximum bid WAS the highest, it would be so ridiculously cheap for an eglu that it would be worth it....

I'll wait and see.

Told OH what I was up to over tea this morning & he said

"Nothing would surprise me any more"

I take that as a challenge

Now, the question is, bantams or LF in the new eglu, whatever colour it turns out to be....... :?:

Good luck with the (pink eglu) and have lots of fun picking the new additions for it :D !

My second-hand (pink eglu) was bought from ebay as a rablu, at a considerable saving over a second-hand eglu even after buying the conversion kit. This was quickly delivered by Omlet and very easy to fit, so don't let the rabbit bit put you off if the price is still good once you've factored the conversion kit in.

Didn't get the (pink eglu) on ebay....probably a good thing as I can't work out when I would have had time to go to Kent for it...but now bidding on a (purple eglu) while dithering about (cube red) instead. I have a very limited budget (don't we all?) so a classic makes more sense in most respects - & would help to prevent my going completely chicken crazy. Whatever I get, has to be my final chicken housing for a loooong time to come.

I'm telling myself that I can manage up to 8 hens but absolutely no more...Have 3 in my !gored! so let's say another 4 in the classic...But then, I can't let them FR all day every day - so would the classic feel really cramped unless I got 2 extensions...? So then I should try and find a 2nd hand cube...

Also been reading the "red mite in cubes" thread and am worrying that a cube might be an expensive error.

Help. :anxious:

I used to be indecisive but now I'm just not sure! :?

Any housing can get red mite so you just need to find a house that you feel you can thoroughly and easily clean to get rid of them, be that an eglu, cube, wooden, house or other plastic one.

The footprint and run spaces of the cube and eglu are similar. You'll need a minimum of 1m of run per hen. For 4 hens an eglu would need the standard run plus a converter then an extension, and the cube would need the standard run and two extensions (there is about a metre of run space under the cube itself).

I'd consider getting electric poultry netting instead then run space is not a problem and you can just concentrate on getting the type of house you want. :)
