Rhoda has had diarrohea since yesterday and has not laid today or yesterday. She always lays one a day. She looks so . I have given them Verm-x over the weekend and used cod liver oil to help it stick to the food the other three all appear well and chase us down the garden. Poor Rhoda just walks slowly. What should I do?

If you suspect that she has a worm infestation, I would recommend that you use Flubenvet.

 

In the mean time, keep her on just pellets and water, the only extras being bokashi bran and plain probiotic yoghurt, which will both help settle things down.

Ditto. If you add some Avipro to the water, then you should see an improvement pretty soon. If it doesn't clear, then take her to the vet soonest as they can go downhill quickly if they have severe diarrhoea.

I didn't think they had a worm infestation I just gave them Vem-X as a precation mixed with corn, meal worms and cod liver oil. Could this have upset her? I feed layers mash with a little garlic mixed in.

When did you last worm them with a licensed wormer such as Flubenvet?

 

I doubt very much that what you gave them would have caused an upset, but a good dose of worms will certainly cause diarrhoea. There can be other causes or course, but this is the first and most likely. If any of my hens has a runny bum, I give them Bokashi Bran in live yoghurt and worm them.

Can I buy Flubenvet from any supplier or do I have to go to the vets? Sorry but this is all new to me, I only got my girls this summer. I will also have to buy Broashi Bran on line as there is no where round where I live that sell it. I am worried it will be too late for Rhoda.

I have ordered Bokashi from Omlet which should be here Friday and Flubenvet on line which should arrive Thursday. Fingers crossed she will be OK. Thank you for your advise.

Rhoda appeared a lot brighter today and was running around more. She didn't lay for the 3rd day. I am not bothered about the eggs but it will give me an indication that she is back to her normal self. Her bottom still looks messy but I don't want to bath her incase she gets a chill. The worming stuff should be here tomorrow.

You can tidy her bottom up by giving it a good wipe with an old damp flannel, and patting it dry.

Thank you I will give her a quick wipe over. She still hasn't laid but she is chasing my husband about for mealworms. He is a feeder and it doesn't mater if you are human or animal he will feed you. The cats and chickens ignore me.

I've got the bokashi bran and will get the live yogart tomorrow. Do I give it to all the girls? How much of each shall I give them? Rhoda is so much better, I have also got the Flubenvet but I will wait untill I know she is 100 percent before I give it to them.

I would just give them all a bowl of Bokashi and yoghurt.

 

Also good for chooks with diarrhoea are ACV and/or Avipro in the water. Life-Guard tonic also has probiotics in it.

 

I'd worm them all as a first step then see how it goes. If it hasn't cleared up in 36 hours, then take hen plus a poo sample to the vet.
