paranoid about sourcrop

Recommended Posts

maz's crop seemed unusually large this afternoon. i felt it and it wasn't solid, more baloon-ish and i was able to massage it easily so i know that knocks impacted crop off of the list. however she is the piggiest of the two and i had just given them porridge (before feeling the crop) so i'm hoping it is just a sign of her big appetite. taking her food away tonight so i can have a look at it in the morning, this seems to be the best indicator because it gets digested overnight right? if the crop is the same in the morning would that be a definite indicator or just a lazy digestive system? really hope she doesn't have it. otherwise that will be two sick chooks :( she didn't lay today but that seems quite normal, it's off and on for her so if it is her crop, i think i may have caught it early. she acts very perky!

i read the chicken faq about making them vomit but have also read that it can be dangerous for the chicken if you are unexperienced at this. ahhh. fingers crossed it is just food.

maj is still going fairly strong, sneezy and in a bigger temp run (made using the underneath of the big table that the eglu is on). just gave her digestive biscuits :) trying to fatten her up a bit. she still isn't trying to strain or lay which i'm pleased about.

Stop worrying you just fed her. Wouldn't harm to check in the morning though. One of mine is more greedy and gets double helping, little pig. I just try not to give them too big a helping of things. :D

Sounds like Maj is taking up all your time. Fingers crossed she's ok.

I have just had three days of a chicken with impacted crop as she really wasn't well, very fluffed up,sleepy and not eating or drinking. I think if it was sourcrop you would know by your hens behaviour. One of mine pigged out on mashed potato a while ago, she had a huge crop and went to bed feeling very sorry for herself but she was fine in the morning. :)
