The best season to buy hens?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am planning to buy my first 2 Bantam Wyandottes for my (green eglu) in the near future, but I don't know if I should wait till Spring, or if I can get them now. I am just thinking, probably it is more difficult to care for the hens in the Winter and I have no experience at all, so maybe it is better to start when "nature is on my side".

Any advice?

I shouldn't worry about missing a topic. It's a big site to trawl through.

I think at the end of the day there is no right or wrong time to get chickens. You get more choice in the Spring or Summer but chickens are more placid in the Winter. Each season brings it's advantages when looking after them. I'm not looking forward to defrosting their water everyday but at least at this time of year they go to bed before I do!

In the UK as a rule many breeders slow down hatching over winter so there are fewer chickens available in the spring than in the autumn and what is available in the spring tends to be more expensive

So I would say that late summer/early autumn is the best time, more choice and cheaper :D
