MarkBevBen
Awww great to hear things are going grand for you all and even your doggy too Our girls also do the thing with their beak, not sure if it's a cleaning thing or whether it's to attract attention? I'm sure it's a 'normal' hen thing to do though and nothing to worry about. I'm sure one of our eggs-perts will be along to tell us what it's all about It's exciting isn't it waiting for your very first egg We're still waiting for Elsie and Hilda, our two new additions to see who will lay first How old are Pandora and Apple now Charlie? Our Elsie and Hilda are now around 19 weeks old.
Charlie7
I clipped their wings! They didn't seem to mind and it went VERY well. My Dad said that it would look ugly, but actually it is not visible. I wanted to let them out today, but it was pouring, so I will let them out tomorrow, if the weather is better. The seller didn't remember the exact date of their birth/hatching, but he did say that it was in April.
Plum
Sounds like you are getting more confident. About the same age as my two wyandottes then

Charlie7
Thanks. I have just opened the door, so they can come out, (watching them through the window) but I think that they are a bit overwhelmed, because they are hiding by the Eglu and refusing to go close to the door. Purplemaniacs
Pandora and Apple are lovely! My older dog is fine with the chooks but I would not trust the younger one, I only let her outside when the chooks FR on the lead, I think she wants to play with them, she is a lab but may hurt them by mistake So I don't risk it. She is a very excitable silver lab. Chrissie
Charlie7
Thanks for all the complements. Pandora ventured out of the run with Apple right in her heels. They had a little look around the garden and seemed very happy. Still no , but nothing to do about that. Chrissie, Charlie isn't very big, so I don't think that he can hurt them. Even though he is lively, he is gentle, even though he chases things, he is much to kind to actually catch them. In fact, once he was running loose on a field and he got very close to a pigeon that he was chasing. He was maybe five cm away from it. Then suddenly he stopped and ran happily away . Attached a picture of him.

Charlie7
Charlie wuffs a thank you for all the complements. About the same age as my two wyandottes then Do yours lay eggs yet, Plum? I have the exact same question as the Omleteer in the "Ask Barbara" part of this newsletter: http://omlet.co.uk/files/public/newsletter_november_27th_2009.html Its the one if the white flakes on the dropping tray. Indeed, it does look like feather tips, but (as far as I know) they are not moulting. Have they been moulting in the farm I bought them from? I thougt that they don't moult intil they are older... Is it possible that they are finished moulting but still drop some feather tips?
Plum
Hen started last week little creamy eggs just 33g but very tasty. From when I got them at 8-9 weeks until a few weeks ago they constantly moulted and replaced feathers as they grew. Seem to be settled in their feathers now. Charlie7
Still no egg. My Grandma keeps on saying: "See, I told you that they wouldn't lay without a rooster" and it drives me crazy! I told her a million times that they would lay, but I can't convince her. She hasn't embraced the fact that the chickens have names either. The girls are doing great, they are out of the run every day with no problems. It's quite obvious that they don't like the bust bath I make for them. They have made their own dust bath in what used to be a flower bed. It was so funny to look at them, Apple is a natural, while Panda... Well, not so much. First, Apple made a dust bath that Panda stole. Apple then make a new one and began to dust bath. Panda then decided to make her own, closer to Apple's. She tried all kinds of weird ways, it really looked funny. She would occasionally peck Apple on the head to show her her frustration. After 20 minutes of unsuccessful "digging", Panda took Apple's bath. Apple went away with no fuss and made a new one for herself.
Charlie7
Look what I found today : I think that it is Apple's. It weighs 38 grams. Can't wait till tomorrow - I will make scrambled egg, both with Apple's egg and an egg from the store and taste how big the difference is.
