Smart Feeder - Light sensor values

Ive just been reading poultrymans diary in this months practical poultry and was intrigued about the mention of the use of a magnet to avoid cockerels from hatching... It was quite a vague discription, Im guessing its not as simple as it sounds otherwise we'd all be talking about it, but has anyone else heard of this or knows how it works?

If it worked then I think the commerical hatcheries that churn out hundreds of millions chickens a year may have caught on by now

I've heard this and a few others like it before and as far as I know, it doesn't work
