Hybrid Hens - Good Broody?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Has anyone ever used a GNR as a Broody?

We were thinking about hatching some more chicks maybe next year?

We would like to do it the natural way next time round and was thinking about letting Orakiah go broody? (Leave rubber eggs in the nesting box for her to see if she'll sit  )

My speckled hen florence is currently sitting on 6 eggs for me. It was unexpected though as hybrids have had that trait bred out of them. I have read that silkies make excellent broodys. An excuse to buy another chicken? or two for integration purposes.

I have convinced my OH that is for the best to re-integrate florence to the others at the same time as 2 other chickens....just to spread the attention.

I have one at the moment  I do wish she would snap out of it-out of all the chooks I have, a GNR when the days got shorter and the temp dropped, was the last thing I expected! None of my others have shown any inclination what-so-ever before and I don't think you can make them sit? Belle is perfectly happy to sit on nothing, but she does poach the others eggs if they lay before I have turfed her out

I had one hybrid who used to go broody, she was excellent mother, the hybrid I had was the brown one you get in ex-bat, but hybrids don't get broody and you can't do much about it, if you have an incubator watch when one of your hens get broody put eggs in the incubator and put the chicks under her when they hatch, that is my favourite way of hatching
