BMI and body water

Recommended Posts

I've just tried out some new scales. Apparently my BMI is low but my water level is high. Is the water level just a function of the fat level? (ie if I have little fat I must be made up of mostly water plus a bit of muscle?) Or should I be worried about high water levels?

I think (and I may be corrected) that low water level would be a problem as it would mean that you are dehydrated. Not sure how high is high. On my scales (which must be inaccurate as I don't really weigh that much  ) my water is usually about 52% which is higher than the average but I think that that is ok!

BMI is a load of rubbish, not accurate, most of the England rugby team are morbidly obese according to their BMI

Thats as maybe. This is the first time in my life I have ever known anything about my BMI level as I don't worry about my weight nor do I weigh myself much, I appear to have stayed roughly the same for about 25 years. However, I am interested in my water level, which is around 58%/59%. Its hard to find any info about it.

Thanks for the replies everybody. Thats a good idea to monitor the levels, OH bought these new scales on Friday to help with his training regime but they've not been used by me except the once as a test. It works by passing some sort of minute electrical impulse through your body from pads (you stand on it with bare feet) on the scales. I can't find the booklet (already) but from memory fat, water and muscle mass resist electricity differently and somehow the scales can work out the proportions of each. I'm not overly concerned because the ranges they give for averages are just that and anyway I don't know how accurate this measuring is. But I would like to know more about high water, or to be reassured it is high purely because my BMI is low. My muscle mass is average.
