Unsecure chicken perches

Does anyone have any ideas. As some of you may remember you helped me to name my beautiful new Kitten Inca who we got about 3 weeks ago.

 

Everything was fine for the first few days until we took her to the vet for her jabs. Ever since then she has had an upset tummy and is stinking out my house. I'm fed up clearing up poo and although she is beautiful its ruining our enjoyment of her.

 

Unfortunately the jabs did coincide with us slowly changing her to kitten food (she came with adult food as she'd been eating the other cats where she was) so we have been unsure of the cause. I took her back to the vet a week ago who confirmed she is healthy and putting on weight ok and could find nothing obviously wrong. Just incase - she was wormed again, given long term antibiotic jab and given a food supplement to firm things up (equivalent to caolin and morphine- is that right) Vet also suggested we slowly move her back to adult food as maybe kitten stuff too rich for her.

 

We have done all this, and whilst its not so runny, it still is and still very smelly. So no real improvment. We are beginning to call her Stinker which is such a shame.

 

Does anyone have any ideas before we spend even more on another trip to vets which makes the situation worse as we live so far away and she gets stressed in the car! I am thinking about swapping her back to the brand of cat food she was on originally (she is currently on IAMS cos thats what our other cats eat- she was on Science plan) but then I think that will be another change and maybe swapping will may make it worse.

Add some Avipro to her water or food, it works wonders with dodgy tums. Get her back to her old food too, so you can eliminate that as the cause, hopefully it'll clear up.

My Poppy cat could never eat Whiskers as a kitten & some of the dried foods made her poorly too. It was trial & error. She was better after her first full course of injections & after being speyed ( funny enoug).

She was always fine with Purina & Pets at homes own make of dried. Wet food - she loves Felix best, but does also like Tesco's & loves Lidl's vitacat pouches.

Inca must have a very sensitive tummy.

Sorry to hear about the smelly situation!

 

I have a new kitten at the moment too. Her poos are pretty stinky, but so were my 2 previous kittens. It might just be a poo/kitten thing. I did notice that kitten milk given as a treat gave them the stinks. I tried a few foods & the one that worked for us was royal canin kitten biscuits & whiskas kitten meat. It didn't give them loose poos & they ate every morsel. I also use wood pellet litter which does absorb smells quite well. Have you thought of a covered litter tray as they have smell absorbers in. I think bicarb of soda absorbs smells too. If I'm honest I just leap up & dispose of the poo asap to deal with the smell...I also sometimes light an incense stick if it's stinky...oh and open the window for a bit. I'm looking forward to when she can go out, but that won't be until I have her spayed in February!!!

This sounds awfully familiar. When Minty was tiny and we tried to move her on to adult food her tummy rebelled too and she 'decorated' each room in the house! If adult cat food is what your kitten was used to then it's possible the change is what is causing this.

 

We resorted to microwaving chicken breasts and then cutting them up really small when Minty was really bad so she maintained a very bland diet. It worked.

 

Neither of mine have ever got on with Whiskers (biscuits or wet food) either. Straight refusal every time (and I swear I don't show them the packaging!)

I would start off very carefully - put her on white chicken/fish (steamed or microwaved) plus cooked rice for a few days. a couple of days of this will mean that she shouldn't be too stinky and/or runny but she will still get the basic nutrients.

 

then I would very gradually mix in a small amount of dried kitten food, gradually increasing the amount of kitten food and decreasing the chicken/fish/rice content. after a week of that, you should be ok just with the dried kitten food.

James Wellbeloved is a really good brand - very natural, hypoallergenic, etc, but Royal Canin is excellent too - in fact any of the premium brands (rather than supermarket stuff) should really be ok.

I'd also suggest that you stay away from wet foods at this stage of her life, because dry foods are better for her health, don't go off in the bowl, have dental benefits etc. as long as she always has fresh water to drink they will be fine.

 

I'm assuming you dont give her milk at all? -either cows or the cats milk you can buy?

if you do the transition as above, and get her on to a quality dried food, dont think you have to mix in meat as well. the ones sold as 'complete' diets (ie James Wellbelvoed,Royal Canin etc) really dont need anything else mixed in - costs you more and unbalances your kitty's diet anyway!

Synbiotic DC capsules daily contain pre and probiotics and should dry things up. Usually you only need to give them for 3-5 days and then as needed. Or you can give Prokolin Paste for 3-5 days and then follow up with Protexin Pro Soluble daily in food.

The stuff the vet put her on was prokolin and we have finished the course without it making any difference so I suspect probiotics will not assist. The thing is we have other cats so I know poo can be very smelly but this is just very wrong, the best way to discribe it is sulphuric! Its also not the right consistency although that has improved a lot. So I don't think its a question of just masking or hiding the smell.

 

I've now decided to take some of the advice above and am slowly transferring her back to the original food she came on so that at least we can rule out food. She was fine when we first got her.

 

I don't know if it alters things but I've also noticed she has smelly wind too. Fingers crossed the food thing changes it.

No what is that and how would I know if its that?

 

The vet didn't do any specific tests other than the usual (I did take a sample but she didn't want it) she wanted to rule out the usual culprits i.e worms or a bug so treated for them initially. I do wonder if her tummy is now just fed up and reacting to everything and I need to give it time to settle. She was given a jab of long acting anti biotics and I keep thinking that when I have them I get an upset tummy!!!

 

Editted to say I have now seen what it is online but in herself she seems VERY well (bouncing around and being kitten like) and is putting on weight well too.
