Minkey
I have 2 buff Pekins who were broody all summer . I have noticed that both of them now have really long nails on their feet (compared to my other 3 who were not broody) and presume it is because they sat in the nest box all summer and have not worn them away. Should I cut them or just leave them be? Thanks, Minkey x
The Dogmother
Leave them be and just make sure that they get plenty of free ranging, especially on hard surfaces. The quick on a chicken's claw is quite close to the tip, and easy to nick, so if you decide to do it yourself, make sure that you have some vet wound powder to hand to staunch the bleeding. If they are persistently broody (as are my pekins) then it's best to pop them in the broody cage - they will suffer from malnutrition and calcium deficiency of they don't get off their bums and eat properly. Stella14
Ground or instant coffee works just as well as wound powder for bleeding.
Pikey
Thanks for this.....i was about to post the same thing. My pekin who sat on a few batches of eggs this summer has the same problem.
Redwing
My Pekins have the same problem, I cut the claws down with dog nail clippers but you do have to be really careful, only take off a bit Styptic pencils from the chemist are good for stopping any bleeding but if you are careful and not overzealous you shouldnt need it
meezers
I do trim the nails on the fifth toes of my Silkie , Faverolles and Dorking, as these are sticking up in the air and don't get worn down .I use the nail clippers I have for my cats. I wouldn't trim any ordinary nails though.
Minkey
Thanks all, can't decide whether to brave it or not now! Might get some wound stuff in first and then see if I have the nerve - am not keen on possible bleeding! They don't seem bothered by them at the moment, but do not come out their house much in this cold weather to give them a chance to wear them down....
