Cheryl
I have about 25 hens and 8 young ones in my enclosure and I am getting about 2 eggs a day from all of them!.. I am battling with red mite at the moment and I think i am making progress, but all the chickens look pale, Im very upset I really dont know whats going on.. I am doing my best to keep them well fed and clean, but they look a bit worse for wear, could it be something ive missed?
Steve the Gas
Its possible and if unsure = vet. How are you tackling the mites? What feed regime do you have? Any info really....
Cheryl
I have sprayed and cleaned out the eglu cube. I have dusted everyone and everywhere with diatom, and i frequently dust as many of them as i can twice a week. I cannot take them all to the vets, and to be honest my vets are useless with chickens..Im wondering if they are being scared by foxes who are living next door under my neighbours shed.. Egluntyne
I'd worm them. They could be pale because of the time of year/ moult and associated going off lay, but they could have worms, which also makes them pale and impacts on their laying. I'd give them a course of Flubenvet if they were mine.
Cheryl
thank you i will try that starting tomorrow.. i did worm them about 6 weeks ago but i will do it again... so, you say that it could be normal for this time of year to go pale, stop laying, is anyone else having this trouble... Jools
You're right, if they're not laying then they do lose the bright red in their headgear and wattles. They'll also be eating a lot less as they don't have to produce the goodies every day. But, red mite can cause them to look pale too, so both could be having an effect. I'd be inclined to add some tonic to their water too (eg Lifeguard/Battles/etc) to give them a bit of a boost.
Egluntyne
you say that it could be normal for this time of year to go pale, stop laying, is anyone else having this trouble... Oh yes. I have 25 hens and only 3 of them are earning their keep.
Steve the Gas
Put vaseline or similar on the ends of the perches. You could even spray 'em with coke and test the theory out.
Plum
I'd try a different product in the house to treat redmite. There are some threads giving the options at top of section.
