Alis girls
have read the thread on winter weather - just a couple of questions - is it safe for chickens to walk through snow - will they get frostbite? should I add bedding to Eglu - if so what - I think I read straw isnt a safe bet. thanks anxiuous new mum
Egluntyne
They will tiptoe through the snow. When they've had enough, they'll take themselves back in. Aubiose is the best bedding IMHO.
Alis girls
Thanks - I have Auboise - I love the vision of them tippy toeing thro snow. The winter link is very good - i have put newspaper down in tray but will remove it as I take on board - gets wet and soggy.
Ash
Hahah, chickens and snow is funny. I had to shovel paths for them last time it snowed.
coco
My girls hated the snow last winter. I had to clear a path for them from the run to under the trees where there was no snow. They all came out in single file looking most upset at the nasty white stuff. I use a good thick layer of Auboise or Easibed in the house. Olly
I don't do anything different in winter, except that if it's VERY cold I might close the Eglu door. I did that about three or four times last winter when very low temps were forecast. I use a handful of aubiose in the poop tray anyway, to stop it sticking, and I have it in the nesting box, but since they roost on the bars mostly I don't see the point in adding any more aubiose - whatever's in the tray won't make any difference. Lavenders_Blue
Mine were most put out by the snow last winter. They refused to come out of their run into the nasty white stuff. However, after about a week of being 'trapped' in their run they got fed up and went for a stamp around in the snow - where they discovered it wasn't as bad as they thought it was! They will be just fine in the snow, if you can give them a covered area that won't get snowed on then all the better.
Trougher
We haven't had snow yet (although it is forecast for later today), but my ex-batts don't seem to mind walking about on frost. I think birds feet are very hardy?
