Oh crumbs! - I think I've got a boy! Opinions please!

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I've had some newbies for about 5 weeks now and been doing steady intro's.

I've been noticing that whenever they are all together - whether in the WIR or outside, the Light Sussex (newbie) has appeared to be 'posturing' i.e. standing very upright with neck feathers raised, over some of the other birds, sometimes to the point where there has been a bit of a s"Ooops, word censored!"!

It crossed my mind a couple of weeks ago that this seemed more like cockerel behaviour but as it was in with another Cockerel and they weren't fighting I wasn't overly concerned.

However, this morning I opened the intro pen into the WIR and almost immediately the LS went for my 2 RIR's! A quick Fan Dance and Ooooer missus!

Please could you take a swizz at some pic's I've just taken and let me know what you think.

Will be contacting the breeder in a bit if my suspicions are confirmed.

Thanks.

Hi Dawn,

I'd say 100% without a doubt you have handsome fella there! Sorry to bear bad news but i am somewhat experienced at spotting a light sussex boy after all 3 of my orginal 6 week old chicks turned out to be boys. The pointed hackle feathers and tail are a dead give away I'm affraid. Can you take him back and swap him? If not there is a purely sussex lady in Alton Hampshire who may be willing to take him if you are an urbanite like us. They have fabulous personalites though !

Good luck,

Laura

Job done - he has been replaced with a RIR! (......and it would have been churlish of me not to bring her some company so I got another Maran as well :roll::lol:

My Wyandotte doesn't seem overly impressed by them - she's had her beak against the intro pen making sort of purring/trilling noises and raising and lowering her neck feathers - with the RIR on the inside mimicking her head movements!
