txswanie
How many toes should a Polish hen have? I got a 4 month old on Sunday which the breeder swears is female. Is it too early to tell yet? In my opinion she does have the puffball hair of a female but I suppose that could change. Funny thing is she has 5 toes on each foot, one of the toes does not touch the ground. Please dont tell me thats a rooster thing... Colette.

Redwing
A few breeds (though not Polands) have five toes and the fifth often doesnt touch the ground so it could be a cross breed or have had another breed mixed in there in the past Cock birds have spurs which are pointy and stick out of the back of the lower leg, these arent toes so wont have a claw on If the bird is young its unlikely to have spurs yet
Patricia W
Most of mine have three, but I have one who has 5. I've put that down to in-breeding - she is the product of a brother/sister cross that I wouldn't recommend. You often don't know if they are male/female till they either crow or lay an egg. Don't believe that hair is a differentiator - I've been wrong too many times!
