Heart in mouth - thought I'd lost hens

Recommended Posts

This morning I went to let the chickens out it was about -15. I got to the coop and it was silent - non of the usual chirrup sounds coming from the girls eager to stretch their legs. I opened the coop door and it was still silent and no one came out. This was about 8.30 too so I was expecting them to charge out. When I looked inside half the girls were missing! I then waded through the snow to the duck house and lo and behold the noisier chickens had bunked up with the ducks last night. They had even laid me an egg.

I was relieved to say the least. Just wish the water wasn't freezing in two hours. :wall:

Yes I think you are right. Part of the problem was I've been digging paths in the snow every day so they can move around a bit. I think these naughty girls had gone over to the duck house, then it had snowed again and covered the path and they didn't fancy getting cold feet walking back in the snow.

OH has just told me that last night was the coldest night in Yorkshire on record so if they can survive that they can get through anything!

Glad they are ok :D

Some neighbours I've never had the opportunity to talk to were really concerned about the girls, they hadn't heard them. I'd moved them up into the house :D . Wonder how many others are thinking it's really quiet.

Good new though - they love hearing them
