KateCooke
I have 4 bantams, hatched some point in late sprint early summer, two have just started laying. What is their expected life span if nothing makes them ill? They are all purebreed. And also I know that hens lay more in their first year but on average how long do they lay for? chicken bark
I think pure breeds should lay for 3 or 4 years - some may go on for much longer. They can live for around 6+ years but this is all dependent on what breed. Hybrids tend to lay for a couple of years and live for about 4. I'm not sure if life span is affected by a breed being a bantam version. Of course this is all very rough guesses.
JamesAyres
Ive had some Hamburg bantams for two years now, and they are currently 4 years old, they seem to have come to the end or reliable egg laying at about 3 and half years. However they seem very healthy and when the do produce an egg they are in a good strong shell and perfect inside. I've been told to expect them to live to around 6-7 years, and a friend had a pair that lasted 7 years. Im not sure how varied it is breed to breed, but as they are Pure bred, they should live for quite a while....
