We had to buy eggs yesterday for the first time in 3 1/2 years

All six of ours have been off lay to coincide with their moults since about mid-October. Then our rescue hen started again two weeks ago... and this morning I found in the nest a sight I haven't had for ages... two eggs! Haven't quite worked out who else has started laying again yet though.

 

I remember reading on here recently that somebody had noticed that a week after the shortest day, her hens clicked back into laying mode... I'm hoping that's what's happening with ours!

Had no eggs from either of my 2 girls I have left since the beginning of June 2010 . Maybe they're having a long rest.

Does anyone know how old hens are when they stop laying ? Mine are nearly 3yrs.

Had to buy a dozen eggs to get through Christmas, first eggs I've bought. My two little marans haven't stopped laying, and at last Hen Solo is laying again after her moult ages ago. The marans are moulting so they may stop soon, I'm hoping the others will start to earn their keep again soon!
