ISCA Posted December 18, 2010 Share Posted December 18, 2010 This is my first Winter with hens (I got them in April). I have 5 (see below). Until a couple of weeks ago the Light Sussex, Dorking and Marans were still laying, now it's just the Marans and Dorking. Being pure breeds I did expect them to slow down production or stop altogether. The fact my Dorking is still laying suprises me as I thought Dorkings were the least reliable layers of all the breeds in my flock. Although the last to start laying, being a slow maturer, she has actually been the most consistent layer and is still going strong despite the cold, dark days. Go Daphne! But being down to 5-6 eggs a week is not good- I may actually have to buy some from the shop soon (oh the disgrace ). How are all your hens laying in this weather? My freeloader comes and goes but she is like that most of the time, irrespective of the weather My coral has only missed a couple of days and my has, I think, reached her henopause anyway! How are all your hens laying in this weather? We're very reliable and aim to please, us Daphnes My lot, however, are extremely unreliable and I haven't seen an egg in months. Which means we haven't eaten anything eggy for months as I can't bring myself to buy any. However, last week I cracked (oooh a pun and bought some, but as a compromise they are duck eggs. Daphne of course laid one as well so as not to be out done Scrambled eggs for brekkie. I also noted a little parcel had arrived in the post from Omlet, only it was not addressed to me! meezers Posted December 18, 2010 Share Posted December 18, 2010 I had 10 eggless weeks ( except for half a dozen from my silkie when she wasn't broody). In the last week my Cream Legbar and Speckledy have come back into lay, but are taking it in turns. The 5 Pure breeds have lovely red combs and wattles but I am not expecting anything from them until the days get longer. Bubbles has retired. chicken bark Posted December 20, 2010 Share Posted December 20, 2010 I have 9 hens but only 5 have ever laid (one is a duff and the others are too young). So I feel really lucky that even in this freezing cold weather I have been getting 3 or 4 eggs a day. Occasionally I may only get 1 but that is plenty to keep me going. Lavenders_Blue Posted December 20, 2010 Share Posted December 20, 2010 Rosie is still laying an egg every 2-3 days at the moment, so egg dishes are very very few and far between at the moment! Bella and Queenie are in full moult and very bald, so no eggs from them for the time being. Dorothy has finished her moult and she crouched for me today, so it looks like we'll be getting some eggs from her again soon Ooh I wonder if it will be on Christmas Day? Minnie&Moose Posted December 21, 2010 Share Posted December 21, 2010 We have 2 hybrids laying alternate days, and 2 pure breeds also laying alternate days. The 3rd hybrid has decided to moult so not expecting anything from her for a while, and the 3rd pure breed hasn't yet started - so getting 2 eggs a day. It's our first winter with any pure breeds and I hadn't expected to get anything from them, so am delighted - particularly with Mona, the leghorn, who has kept up with the hybrids since she first started laying! Alis girls Posted December 28, 2010 Share Posted December 28, 2010 3 bog standard gingernuts - 3 eggs today, sometimes only two and one day none - but continued all thro bitter weather - very happy as they laid enough for relatives to take some back home on Christmas Day and today.
