Eggasperated
I've just got my last lot of potatoes out of store to eat and they are absolutely horrible! They have gone really sweet tasting and I think they must have got too cold where they were stored. I've never had this happen before but reading on the Internet it seem that the starch has turned to sugar because of the cold temperatures we've had this year. I'm really cross as they were my best cropping potatoes and I've got a huge bag of them. Is there any way to redeem them or is that it and they must be destined for the compost? chickencam
This will have happened to a lot of people this year. Some of ours are better than others, they are stored on pallets at the back of our insulated garage and have still been frosted. I find that they are ok as mash with plenty of other yummy stuff mixed in or in gratins again with loads of lovely cream or stock. they are at theit worst baked or roasted I find. they are also ok in curries and casseroles. Eggasperated
Thanks chickencam - gratin is a good idea I'll give that a go, it seems criminal to throw the whole lot away. Mine were stored in my garage too.
sjp
if they have been frosted or frozen spuds will start to rot as they warm up it seems to be like blight I've already bined a lot already. first time I've ever had spuds frosted in store

Guess I'll be sorting through them all later.

chickencam
I opened a bag of Desiree the other day and there were a couple of rotten ones in there, I hate the smell of rotten potato The rest of the sack seem ok though.
Lesley
We've lost potatoes as well this year - they were in an outbuilding on raised pallets. We also lost 5 butternuts We've got the rest of the potatoes in the spare bedroom now.
chickencam
I had to compost a couple of butternuts and quite a few of my tiny pumpkins this weekend, they were in the garage and got frosted and were starting to rot. I still have a few left so I will have to use them quickly.
