Kylie1007
How high does a fence need to be to stop chickens hopping over it? Hopefully building a bigger run for them around the coop so that they can semi- free range next week.
Mollie333
Depends on what breed. My Hybrid girls can fly on top of the coop and then out of the WIR, but the pekins haven't even attempted.
karlotta
I would say that they can fly up onto a solid object much easier than a wobbly one (ie poultry netting). Mine have no problem flying up onto the top of the cubes (including favorelles and orps) but don't bother trying to get over the electric fence. I'd say you'd need at least 5ft for heavy girls and taller for flightier sorts. Bear in mind though that a fox can easily get over 6-7ft. I heard about someone last week who had 40 hens taken from behind 7ft security fencing...
sparkysmum
Hello Kylie Our sablepoot bantams can clear a 6 foot fence as if it wasn't there & fly into the trees! Does it maybe depend on the weight of the hen Our faverolle would be defeated by anything over 2 feet
Egluntyne
I have a couple of hybrids who can easily fly onto the roof of the WIR, so I'd say to be certain, it needs to be over 6ft. I agree with karlotta about the poultry netting. So long as they can't get onto something such as an Eglu and then fly over it.
maxjam
Yeah I put up a 6ft 6in fence and several of my chickens cleared it with ease! I ended up putting pigeon netting over a 30ft square run for piece of mind
Kylie1007
OK - I have a faverolle, a silkie and an orpington. I heard that silkies dont fly? But my faverolle may or may not fly Looks like we may need to totally enclose it then? I dont want them roaming totally free as I have a little boy that I don't really want amongst poo or want poo on our new deck!
