Football thuggery

Recommended Posts

ES 15 plays for local side. Yesterday he was "shouldered" in ribs by some Neanderthal on opposing side and is now in pain. If it doesnt improve we will have to get chest xrayed to see if rib is fractured -and then really just pain relief and rest. He told the ref who was old and he said he didnt see anything - stupid man should be pensioned off or get specs. The thug wasnt given a red (is it?) card and ES did exchange a few choice  words with him. My son is no angel but isnt violent but hes been studded deliberatly and had other injuires. yes I know its the rich tapestry of life but feel the coaches and refs should be stricter. His mate who argued and swore at a ref was banned for 5 weeks - I will be taking it further esp if rib is broken. We all know football has a bad name and only have to look at the press to see most not all but many are bad examples to the youth of today. It appears bad language which harms no one is puniched more than physical injury. I will now get off my soapbox

OH dear, I hope ES is OK.

It's a contact sport and the ref's eyes can't be everywhere. I think verbal dissension is punished harshly to maintain the ref's authority, unfair as that sounds.

My son in law plays rugby and was yellow carded (sent to the sin bin) for punching an opponent this weekend :shameonu: (he is a gorgeous mild mannered guy who is a real hands on daddy with his year old daughter for heaven's sake).

His opponent was sent off for arguing that he should have been red carded :wall:

I would hope that, had the ref seen the incident, the guilty party would have been dealt with by the appropriate sanction. As has already been said, referees can't see everywhere. This chap is unlikely to be pensioned off because they are desperate for referees. Unsurprisingly, not many people want to take the abuse that is offered on a weekly basis!

I have to say that I am quite pleased that the mate got sent off for swearing at the ref. My OH is a football referee and the amount of verbals he gets is incredible. If someone swears at him - they are off - end of story!

I would love to see professional footballers, commentators and managers take a referee's course and try to referee a few Sunday morning games. If they saw how difficult it was, I am sure that the referee would not be the bad guy so often and - if these people started treating refs with a bit of respect - then ordinary players might follow suit.

Having had my moment on the soap box - I really hope that your lad feels better soon.

I appreciate everything thats been said and if I was a ref and a teen or parent came and were verbally abusive I would probably be abusive back and giving out red cards all over the place :anxious: however I was cross ere lack of concern.

Yes its a contact sport but there is too much deliberate and I mean deliberate physical violence and I have witnessed it and voiced my opionions ( thats why ES doesnt want me at matches  ) but in this case I have a 15 yr old who is on painkillers poss for 4 weeks, cant do sport and is in a lot of pain. there is a risk of chest infection and pneumonia if he doesnt breathe properly - try getting a stroppy 15 yr old to do deep breathing when in pain - they just won't. I think hes gone to school today but i left before he did so OH was overseeing that. He has had so many injuires and so have his mates more form "dirty teams" than accidental. I have voiced my opinions to his coach and the matter is being looked into. The team have lost a good player for 4-6 weeks. It is so unneccessary all this violence = what happened to good sportsmanship. Grrrr

Don't get me wrong - I don't condone the violence that was meted out by the yob concerned. IMHO he has gone beyond the rules of the sport and is practically in the realms of a criminal assault. I am really sorry about your son and I hope that he feels much better soon.

It may be that this particular ref is one who doesn't like confrontation and didn't "see" the incident just because he didn't want to deal with it. If that is the case, he shouldn't be a ref!

I hope that there is some resolution and I didn't intend to make light of the incident itself!

no offence taken ladies your support is appreciated - i just loathe the mindless thuggery of it, gone are the days when gentlemen shook hands - now they "shoulder, stud and thump" each other and then shake hands at the end. Laughable if it werent so silly. OSH I didnt feel you were making light of it - I am just a bit fed up at present but it will pass always does. thanks again. Ali x

Thats why I prefer Rugby - on the whole it seems so much more friendly - despite the blood usually dripping from a few players at anyone time, and the state of the players ears and noses... They just seem to accept the Ref's calls, and hold no grudges - and that goes for many supporters as well. (There are of course exceptions, but generally...)

Just hope it doesn't become like Football...
