lenaceratops
So far our hen family consist of two Lohman Ranger's and a Legbar Hybrid, the two Lohman's are getting on in years and arent laying to frequently now so we want to introduce two more girls to the family. We have asecond house and run set up next to the original house and run so they can get to know one another before actually being in with each other so now we just have to decide what chooks we want. I'm happy to take on a couple that another home can't keep but we are also starting to look around at local suppliers as we'd like to get them fairly soon. Breeds on the shortlist are Light sussex Blue Maran White leghorn Bluebelle Amber Link What do you think? Any preferences?
Sue
I think you can't beat the colour of a nice Marans egg, they always taste better to me as well, but I am probably just biased all the best Sue Dark Brown Eggs
Daphne
Leghorn's are good producers but can be a bit flighty, the Amber Link should be a good layer, I've heard bluebelle's can be a bit less prolific than some hybrids but they are very attractive and should do well, sussex are good layers and easy to keep but may go broody and as said, marans lay a very attractive egg. I think you should go and have a looksee to find out which type of birds you like the look of best, and also the conditions at the sellers
Chortle Chook
Yes, definitely go take a look. I love the appearance of the Bluebells I've seen on this forum, and a Maran's deep brown egg does look so yummy. The truth is, whatever you set out to get, you are bound to come back with something different, or at least, that is what seems to happen 90% of the time unless you are very firm with yourself. Don't forget that very few Marans will lay very dark brown eggs, so you must ask to see the colour they are likely to lay, or you may be in for a disappointment. lenaceratops
Thanks everyone My local supplier is of top standard I've already been to have a look around and he was very helpful, even let me watch an egg that was just hatching in the incubator, was almost like a day out. I've just seen that has got some new chook breeds hatching soon, speckledy maran (hybrid ?) and the black leghorn, am I right in thinking that the black leghorn would still lay white eggs? See I'm changing my mind again

We've also got a light sussex bantam who lays tiny eggs (though big for her size) every two days.
daxigirl
Ooo Leghorn's the way to go (I want one anyway), just think they're only petite too so there's potential space too. Large white eggs, Leghorn, white eggs (are you hypnotised yet?)
