mnwickens
I am completely new to keeping chickens and will probably be spending a lot of time in these forums. My first request for help is in identifying the chickens I've been given. Here's a link to a picture of my six hens: http://twitpic.com/3x5jzx They were given to me by a friend of my dad's. I started building their coop and run about a month ago but just received the chickens yesterday. They are all very young I believe, three haven't started laying yet. From what I have seen on the breeds website on this website I think they are possibly, from left to right, Barnevelder, I think Orpington, Sussex, Welsummer, the next might be a Brahma still developing it's colours and the last I'm not sure, it looks like a few I've looked up. Any ideas? I'd appreciate any help.
beckyfitz
They're beautiful I'm not very knowledgable but what you've said looks about right to me - the last one could be a Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire??? Someone who knows more will probably be along soon! Good luck with your lovely ladies, Becky x

mnwickens
Thanks for the help with the link. They are still settling in to their new coop right now. Only one has braved the ramp going out to the run while the rest sit inside. The one is in and out at the moment. I guess they will take a while to relax. They're definitely not as tense as they were yesterday! I keep feeling surprised at how big they are. The kids are loving being able to go out and see them through out the day. karlotta
The one at the front looks like a Buff Orpington, the 2nd from the right is Splash, maybe a brahma or cochin as it looks like it has feathery legs (can't see the shape clearly to tell which) and the third in could be a Welsummer? The other three look like various hybrids (black rock/sussex hybrid and warren type).
JS1
I'm confident that fourth from left is a Welsumer - image of one of my new girls:-) I think second from left is Orpington, third is light Sussex and furthest right is either Rhode Island Red or a hybrid. Not sure about black one - could be black rock, but I'd be guessing. Or, if it has copper through it, maybe a Maran. Whatever they are, they are gorgeous! mnwickens
Thanks for all the replies! I really appreciate it. I think I've settled on what most are but I think some are still developing their colours. I have more questions but I should probably give them their own thread. mnwickens
I've been surprised at their colouring and different looks. I keep changing my mind about which is my favourite. I think a few are still developing so it'll be interesting to see how they turn out.
