Rainy day games for chickens

Recommended Posts

Glad you started this thread! I just got my girls and their Eglu yesterday and they seemed to settle quite well in the run yesterday in the sunshine. They were a bit hesitent about the Eglu itself at bedtime but I managed to persuaude them in using a torch as suggested by Omlet (worked a treat!).

Today we have already had two tiny eggs but ... they don't like the wind up 'em!!! They come out for a minute, do one circuit of the run and then they are back in the hen house. In fact, the Light Sussex doesn't even do that! It is windy and cold but I sort of expected them to be able to cope with this!!

I am a little worried about them being squashed up together in that confined space (in the Eglu) all day but haven't noticed any squabbles just chuntering. Is this normal or are my bunch just wimps??

(I'm probably worrying too much - new mother syndrome, I think :)

My girls have stayed in their run this morning, out of the rain. They have been playing a game where 1 chicken makes a lot of noise, picks up a leaf in her beak and the others have to then chase after her round the run to try and get it. Endless fun!

sounds like fun :lol: mine keep calling out, let them out to fr with me there for abit but they are back in now, wish i had some cabbage to hang up :D

Hehehehhehe - think they are just a bit fretful. They will all settle in time when they get used to their new surroundings...and weather!

I dared to move the wheelbarrow once - my girls were all happily free-ranging but as soon as the wheelbarrow made a noise, off they shot into the Eglu. Mittens (Light Sussex) didn't come out for hours - think it was actually the next day. None of them will walk past the wheelbarrow now - even when it's parked being silent! Funny little beasts.

The joys of chicken ownership :D

I'd put up some sort of windbreak for them. Old bit of fence, something leaning up against the run or lots of us have used shower curtains fastened to the run with bungee cords to give them some shelter. :D

Gave mine some spaghetti yesterday that was good for a laugh they were convinced they were worms
