Henchanted
Hi I have several questions that I have not been able to find answers to any where, so am appealing to your wisdom/eggsperience...... 1) how much feed per hen ? I have given one 5oz (140 gm) scoop each in the morning plus one of mixed corn to share late afternoon. They have left at least a quarter to a third feed each day, so am I feeding too much? 2) do I throw away uneaten feed or can I use it the next day? (I bring it indoors overnight) 3) do I wash the feeder every day or just once a week? (drinker gets washed daily) 4) do I have to add the vinegar to the water every day? I'll be grateful for all input, thanks
oneyolktoanother
Hi in the winter i just put enough pellets daily and then bring them in of a night, i wash the feeder every couple of weeks as it is needed. With the cider apple vingear i put a capful in the water say every other week for a few days at a time. Back to the feeders with have galvinised one and i put about 3 to 4 cupfuls of pellets daily for my four hens. Hope this has helped
C&T
They should have access to food all day, so our feeder is topped up as required, and normally lasts a couple of days at a time. It gets washed once a week normally. Ours doesn't get brought in at all - although did when we had rodent issues for a short while. That way they have food when they first get up - long before I lke to leave my bed in the summer!! We don't throw any food away. They will also eat a lot more when they start laying - so watch out for sudden increase in food consumption!! I don't put vinegar in their water - so can't help you there. We never ust to take our food in at all but some reason if leave it out through the night the pellets are going damp so of a morning i have to troddle out the food etc while half a sleep just wandered what pellets you use? some of mine have just sarted laying and like you say there is a sudden increase in food cunsumption
C&T
We use mash rather than pellets - and seems to be OK most of the time. If weather is has been very "damp", then might use the mash to make a wet mash - which gets demolished quite happily!
oneyolktoanother
when not worming them i give them a bowl of mash aswell as the pellets they love it and will dance for it
Chortle Chook
Hi1) how much feed per hen ? 2) do I throw away uneaten feed or can I use it the next day? 3) do I wash the feeder every day or just once a week? 4) do I have to add the vinegar to the water every day? Somewhere on the Omlet bag it said how much per hen and I used to religiously measure it out, but I found that my chooks did not eat anywhere near the recommended amount, probably because they are FR and also because they do get quite a few leftovers such as bits of pasta, mashed pots, greens etc. Now I take in their Grub each day, and when I get up in the morning before work, I tip any leftovers into a separate bowl, add some extra new stuff in and then add the older stuff back on top so that the total amount for my 6 chooks equals about 2 Omlet scoops (level, not heaped) per day. I only wash the Grub and throw away food when it has been really rainy and the food has got soggy inside. I don't use any additives in their water. coco
I fill the feeders whenver they need it and I leave it out at night [so far no sign of any visitors]. i wash the feeders when they need it., after all my girls spend all day scratching round in the dirt. I think adding apple cider vinegar is a personal choice, I have given it to mine although to be honest I can't say I could see any visible difference.
