Cube run - pros and cons

Recommended Posts

Well, I've managed to get a second hand cube a while ago but it doesn't have a run, so I've been pondering my options in the hope Omlet would bring out a WIR, which they now have. Putting aside all the issues surrounding the new Omlet WIR (which I think are covered pretty well in their own thread!?), even if I go for an Omlet WIR, I'll need to do a LOT of saving and from what I can see, I would still need a Cube run to attach to the WIR (unless I put the Cube in the WIR, which seems to take up a lot of the useable space?) So it seems I will still need a Cube run even if I ugrade to a WIR in future.

So, really my question is, those of you who have Cube runs, what do you think of them? Are they easy to clean? What do you think of them size wise/ how many extensions do you have?

Thanks all!!

I have three cubes inside a WIR. One of them has a three metre run attached so that I can isolate hens or do intros as I need to. This has been invaluable.

I also have a cube in the garden with a four metre run for my three Orps and four pekins. Both have their merits.

I do like having the cubes inside the WIR rather than outside. Underneath one of them I have made a broody coop by fixing part of an old eglu run door to the skirt area. I have the underneath parts of the cube runs intact on all my cubes so that I can attach grubs and glugs to them.

I have a cube train with 6 m, I have a large door on the side which I can get in without crawling and have hinged the little door at the end so I can step in. I have looked at getting a WIR but I can't justify the cost as I don't really see what more it would add to what I have already invested in. My chicken only use their cube train when it rains (as it is covered) or if they feel like a perch on the perching table. They have a large area of garden to free range in behind omlet netting, I am considering up grading this to electric fencing. If I bought a WIR I wouldn't feel like I could let them out as much as I would need to get my monies worth. The advantage of a wir would be I could sit in there and it would be easier to clean out. If I was starting again I would get a wir rather than a cube train, but I am committed at the moment.
