AJuff
We are hatching eggs at school as part of our new life topic. I am as excited as the kids! 12 eggs have been resting and will be ready to go in the incubator first thing tomorrow. 6 Poland chamois a mix of silver and gold laced and 6 exchequer leghorns. We'll keep the chicks in school for two weeks after hatching and then a friend and I are expanding our flocks!
sjp
just a thourght wouldn't it be better to set the eggs so that they hatch on a tuesday or a wednesday that way any early or late hatching chicks aren't left over a weekend without attention and theres more chance that the kids young and old get to watch the hatch
beckyfitz
How exciting! I did that with my nursery class a couple of years ago, we had chooks & ducks. The kids loved it, we made some countdown charts in the shape of eggs which they took it turns to colour in or tear off every day. I enjoyed it so much I had some of my own this year Good Luck Becky x
AJuff
I did think of setting them earlier in the week but I didn't want the eggs sitting about too long! I think I'm a bit impatient! The children made a 21 countdown chick on the numberline so they can move the chick along on a peg. I think some of the staff are just as excited too! I did have a little mishap with one egg when the lid fell on it and it broke! My fault really as I was trying to remove some of the polystyrene beads off the lid that were off the packaging. Only 5 exchequer eggs and 6 pollards now. I plan to candle them next Friday and see what's happening.
AJuff
I candled the eggs today! It was all very exciting as it's the first time I've ever candled eggs. The first egg was completely clear however the next 10 were all clearly showing veins and eyes! Amazing. 13 days to hatch date! Can't wait, I think I'm more excited than the kids! AJuff
I have an incubator question. When do I need to take out the egg tray and put a non slip mat down? is it when turning has stopped? You see I'm wondering if the slightly smaller eggs might hatch first, I don't think they are bantams as the listing didn't say so. If they do and they are still in the egg tray will it be a disaster? AJuff
What an exciting week! Last Wednesday 2 of the eggs pipped, by the end of the day 5. Thursday lunchtime we watched two chicks hatch! All very excited. During assembly another hatched and by the end of the day five had made an appearance. Friday morning eight little chicks, four exchequer leghorns and four polands. Staff and kids are delighted! I took lots of pictures but haven't had the time to put them on the computer yet. Will try later on!
