Violet unwell

Recommended Posts

Violet, our ex-free range is almost 3. Just over a week ago, she got an impacted crop. she got through it, but then wasn't eating, but drinking loads. She just stood their, with her feathers fluffed up. She's doing white liquid poos, with blood in. We took her to the vets, who said it might be a tumour (as she couldnt hear Violet's heart beat well), or a kidney infection. She gave us some antibiotics to put in her water. I don't think its coccidiosis, as she should be vaccinated against it. She was improving, but today shes a lot worse :( . She's constantly sleeping, and won't really drink at all, and her combs gone pale and floppy :(

Sorry to hear about you poorly girl. Cany you syringe water into her as hens can dehydrate very quickly.

I think lily has been laying softies but hopefully she will stop completely soon as her comb and wattles have shrunk to nothing and have gone very pale. At least the better weather is coming as I think this winter has taken its toll on her.

She sounds very unwell :( You can support her with fluid, tempting with food (warmed mash, weetabix(no milk just water), mealworm, baby foods) and TLC but she may need another trip to the vets. Coccidiosis vaccinations do not provide lifelong protection but I think that it is unlikely to be the cause of her current illness.
