Poor little lady with lice-treatment advice

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Have noticed one of my girls has got lice :anxious: No sign of skin damage or feather loss, but she really is well.

Have been reading around and am getting a bit baffled by the numerous lotions and potions out there. This morning I got some Red mite powder and have some diatom and have given her a good dusting with this. Similarly the other girls (who are all fine and look clear, but just in case). Dusting them is a bit of a nightmare, so I was wondering about sprays or drops (eg as a regular treatment). Was looking at Ivomec/Eprinex etc that can worm as well as this is a bit tricky. Any help and advice would be great, along with places to purchase (House is cleaned top to bottom this afternoon as a precaution).

Cheers

Ian

Worming and Red Mite are totally different.

Red Mite mainly lives in cracks/crevices in the hen house. They come out and feed on the girls blood overnight - that's why in they day they are grey, and in the morning are red. You must spray the house (not the girls) to get rid of them, and treat the wood/cracks of the house to avoid a repeat.

Meanwhile, dust the girls with powder - I know it's a bit of a nightmare, but their health is paramount.

Worms are internal, and the only real way to treat them is Flubenvet mixed with their food.

Good luck.

Have you ascertained whether it's Red Mite or lice?

If it's lice, you should see clusters of greyish eggs at the base of the feathers round the vent area. These can be snipped off if you can't pull them off easily. Tiny critters will be crawling around too :vom: . Easy to treat with Johnson's Mite Spray (Pets at Home etc sell it).

Here are some useful links for you.

Hi

It is definitely lice (little brown critters). There is pretty much no other signs, just quite a few of these lice. I read on the forum that the barrier lice and red mite treatments are similar and I can report that this morning I have had to look really hard to find them, so a good dusting has worked. Only problem is that they keep appearing around her face and eyes  as this seems like the only place where they are safe. Have been picking these off as they appear. Have got a vets appountment this afternoon, but she is still not eating much and really isnt looking well :(

I was also after some more recent advice on the use of Ivermectin (Ivomec Eprinex) as this treats internal and external parasites in an easy few drops on the skin.

Just wondering as if there are lice around then there is no reason the others will pick them up too :anxious:

Anyway, will see how we get on later-cheers for the replies

I can certainly vouch for Ivomec Eprinex for lice and northern fowl mite which one of our girls had and is awful to get rid of - but you'll need to get it from the vets. It's not licenced for poultry but he calculated the correct dosage based on my hen's weight and it worked really well. We had to treat all the girls to be sure the mites didn't get passed on, and re-treated them again 4 weeks later. You can also use it as a preventative every quarter against 'normal' mites ie. the brown ones you have.
