nanarock
Hi everyone just collected my second hand Eglu last night. It is 3 years old. I am really pleased with it but when moving it there soundsw to be water somehere in the body. have taken out the tray and tipped eglu upside down to see if there is any diange holes. none seen. Will water in there cause a problem in the winter? Will chickens be cold. The previous owner only had chickens for a month and then left the Eglu up in his garden for 3 years uninhabited. Has anyone had a similar problem and how do I drain it out. Thank Sylvia
Egluntyne
My old Mark 1 Eglu has water sloshing about inside it. I think it must have been caused by cleaning it with a power washer on a couple of occasions. I don't bother with that now. You could perhaps drill some tiny holes and let the water out, but that would leave a way in for red mite and the like. My chickens never seem cold in the Mark 1, and they survived the cold snap last winter without complaining.
nanarock
Thanks for the suggestion I will try that. One more question do you have to keep the eglu body in the shade during the summer? The lady I am purchasing my chickens from seems to think they can get to hot inside.
Cinnamon
Not at all - it is nice & cool for them in summer, & warm in winter.
nanarock
Thanks for that I had visons of myself dragging it around garden to avoid the sun or having to build a shade for it. Going to choose chickens this afternoon cant wait.
Cinnamon
Have fun! You will probably find that you will be making a shade for them anyhow. We chicken keepers do pamper them a bit

Reikiranf
The drainage hole in the nest box of my eglu wasn't sealed properly on the join and water got into the base, it froze in the winter so after finding my darling Yum Yum frozen solid in the nest box one morning, as soon as the weather got milder I drilled holes in the underside of the eglu to drain the water out. I did mean to seal them up and the join in the nest box but haven't got round to it yet I don't know if I was just unlucky but if I were you I would drill a hole or two and get rid of the water.I've never used a pressure washer on my eglu, I only rinse it with a watering can. Enjoy your girls, I was amazed at what characters they are and love them to bits, they definitely change your life for the better
Patricia W
I remember a thread where someone came up with a solution using a piece of string pushed in the hole which went into the water with the other end hanging down outside - all based on the theory of osmosis! I agree that power washing is likely to be the cause.
beach chick
we also had this situation, and we drilled small drainage holes in the underneath bits of the main cover and the pophole ... never had any mites, and it made cleaning much easier (because water is HEAVY!)
